Description:

What is the relationship between philosophy and life? Is a philosophy always based on the philosopher’s life? In what ways? What should we think when a philosopher’s life conflicts with their philosophy? Should the philosophy transform the life, or vice versa? How? What about a philosopher widely reputed to have denied the philosophical relevance of biography? Examining the controversial but fascinating case of Martin Heidegger, Professor Thomson will examine these and other issues in detail, explaining what some other philosophers (such as Nietzsche and Arendt) have said about them and presenting his own views. The talk will be followed by a public discussion.
