This presentation means to think the manner in which one gains access to the experience of an artwork's meanings and values. Set in the context of contemporary Institutional theories of art, that of David Davies in particular, my argument is that Jacques Derrida's concept of 'trace' can be used to account for the manner in which we come to encounter an artwork's phenomenon better than competing theories or concepts, such as Davies' 'artistic vehicle'.
