Philosophy and education currently seem to be in an ‘all or nothing’ situation: Either education is completely subordinate to philosophy or else the two have no explicit relation at all. This talk will briefly review some of the major developments in the controversy concerning the ideal relation between philosophy and education and then suggest a new approach that would move the two fields beyond their traditional relations of either ignorance or domination and instead put them into a relationship of free and responsible mutual commitment.
