We are very proud to announce that three of our current PhD students have been awarded very prestigious and competitive fellowships.

Kaity Creasy has been awarded a DAAD Intensive Language Course Grant, which she will use to fund an 8-week intensive language course at the Goethe-Institut in Freiburg, Germany. The DAAD is granting Kaity 2925 EUR (or $4042 USD), which will cover her course fees and some of her travel and lodging costs. Congratulations, Kaity!

Gino Signoracci has been selected as the winner of one of the 2014 Russell J. and Dorothy S. Bilinksi Dissertation Fellowships, which has been made available to UNM doctoral candidates thanks to a generous gift from the Bilinski Educational Foundation. Gino is one of only five UNM doctoral candidates to receive this prestigious fellowship.  His dissertation explores the reception of philosophies of India in German intellectual circles during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.  Specifically, it critiques G.W.F. Hegel's account of Indian culture and thought, and looks at local debates motivating Hegel's judgments of Indian traditions.  More information about Gino's project, and the dissertations of the other 2014 Bilinski Fellowship winners, can be found here.  Congratulations, Gino!

Joe Spencer has been awarded UNM's prestigious 2014 Graduate Dean's Dissertation Fellowship.  The Fellowship earns Joe a stipend of $8,000 for the 2014-15 AY, which will assist him as he completes his dissertation, Mathematized Truths: Alfred Tarski and Alain Badiou. In the dissertation, Joe explores and compares how Tarski and Badiou draw on the resources of set theoretical mathematics in their respective attempts to provide a formal account of the concept truth.  Ultimately, Joe aims to show that the comparative study of these two thinkers, who hail from different philosophical traditions, provides us insight into the usefulness of employing formal apparatuses to answer existential questions. Congratulations, Joe!
