Essay Prize Submissions Now Being Accepted

The Department of Philosophy at the University of New Mexico is pleased to announce the second annual Barrett Undergraduate Essay Prize, which has been made possible through generous support from the Gwen J. Barrett Endowment in Philosophy. 

Submission Deadline: Wednesday 8 April 2015 by 3:00 p.m.

Award Announcement: No later than Wednesday 22 April 2015

Eligibility:  Any currently enrolled UNM undergraduate who has officially declared his/her major or minor in Philosophy is eligible to submit for consideration a paper that deals with philosophical subject matter.  The paper must be accompanied by a UNM faculty member’s endorsement, and may be a paper that was composed for a course taken in the UNM Department of Philosophy.  Each applicant may submit only one paper for consideration.

Awards: The winner of the Barrett Undergraduate Essay Prize will be paid a $250 scholarship award that will be credited to his/her Bursar Account.  The payment of the award will be processed within a week of the prize announcement.

Submission Guidelines: To be considered for the Barrett Undergraduate Essay Prize, papers must be accompanied by a completed BUEP Cover Sheet  and formatted according to the following guidelines:

 - The paper must be prepared for blind review (i.e., there should be no information in the body of the paper that identifies the author).

 - The paper must be written in Times Roman 12-point font.

 - The paper must be no longer than 25 double-spaced pages.

 - The paper must be submitted as a .pdf file.

Making the Submission: The paper and fully completed Cover Sheet must be sent to thinker@unm.edu between Monday 23 February 2015 and Wednesday 8 April 2015.  Use “Barrett Essay Submission” as the subject line of the email message.
