Description:
In the Marxist philosophical tradition, critique is the central method of analyzing ideological and political-economic phenomena. This is often characterized as a "negative epistemic practice," or shedding away falsehoods in order for truths to emerge out of this vacuum. This paper examines Althusser's interpretation of Marx's critique in Reading Capital and his own concepts of knowledge production in dialogue with Marx, Georg Lukacs, and the Situationist theorist Asger Jorn and Guy Debord to find a "positive epistemic practice" in critique. This positive practice produces new knowledge out of critique and in conjunction with imagination can open the way to radical alterity in our socio-economic relations.
